#3026 04/29/08 Card #3026 Some of you are emailing me about the warning labels on the Gamsol Bottles. Let me first say, that Gamsol is TOXIC, and should be used with caution around children and pets. I have been researching safer alternatives to Gamsol, and that has led me in the direction of a product called Zest-It. I have a sample coming from the UK, that is safer, non toxic and less worry than the Gamsol. Someone else has also told me that they tried Goo Gone, among other label adhesive removers, and I tried Goo Gone Spray Gel (Walmart) this morning. Surprisingly, it actually worked. Here is the VERY close up sample I did with it, and I was pleasantly surprised. I will continue to use the Gamsol because I like the way it works the best, but for those who have health concerns or kidlet concerns, the Goo Gone Spray Gel seems to be a safer alternative. I will report on the Zest It when IT arrives! Please read the warnings on the GGG label too.
#2596 09/06/07 Card #2596 Materials used: Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits. Use a small wide mouth jar with a sponge in the bottom. Pour in enough Gamsol to come half way up the sponge. Do not cover the sponge. You need to soak up Gamsol on the blending tool you will be using, and if you overfill, it gives you too much. Marvy Matchables black ink is my first choice. Any waterproof ink will do, but MM cleans off the stamp easily and is a small, hard pad that is easy to handle. Only the black is waterproof. Make sure the pad is well inked. Micron .005 archival ink pen is used for filling in any stamping details that might be missing when stamped. Prismacolor Pencils. Others work too, but these are heavily wax based and spread nicely with the Gamsol application. Blending stumps, tortillons and Q-tips. Choose smaller tortillons for the darker shades of each color family and use a blending stump for the lighter shades of each color family. Color on a sample of the pencil near the end of each stump and label it with the pencil color and name. Do the same with the tortillons. Color swatches make it easy to locate when searching for the colors and you will not duplicate them, saving money.
#2595 09/06/07 Card #2595 Beckett Expression Cardstock is a perfect choice for this technique. It is a super smooth bright white cardstock that allows very nice application of Prisma Colored Pencils and Gamsol. you can get the Beckett at www.marcopaper.com call them to ask for the Radiance Beckett Expression 80 lb cardstock. It is not listed on their website. Georgia Pacific CS from Walmart works fine too.
#2593 09/06/07 Card #2593 The fundamentals of shading always consist of a light base color, a medium shading color and then areas of darker shading and sometimes highlights. You can also use the paper color to create the lightest shade. Look carefully at commercial items that are colored. You will notice all three shades of color are used to create depth in an item. Choose a color and apply it LIGHTLY, with the side of the pencil, to the areas you wish. In this case it is a light brown for the bunny fur, creating the base color. Then add Flesh to the face, inside the ears, the tummy, and the bottom of the feet.
#2592 09/06/07 Card #2592 A second option to color application is reverse shading. Apply color with a heavier hand to the outside edges of the area you wish to color; the balloons in this case.
#2590 09/06/07 Card #2590 Dip your blending tool into the Gamsol, and with small circular motions, touch the blending tool to the edges of the color and pull the color out to the center, as with the balloons, or blend the color evenly as with the bunny's body. As it is pulled out with the Gamsol and the blending tool, it becomes lighter, creating a shaded area. Use more Gamsol as needed. Additional color can then be added for highlights. Use a separate blending tool for each color you work with, being careful not pick up other colors, causing smearing
#2589 09/06/07 Card #2589 You can also add darker areas of the same color to create shading. Notice where the added color is located on the bunny's body and around the ears and feet. The most common problem with shading, using any medium, is over blending. Do not apply so much color the second time that you totally eliminate the base color. If this happens, erase some of the color with a white eraser, or just darken the entire image and add MORE color to create the shading. But remember, the more color you add, the darker the item will be. Less is best until you become familiar with all the colors and the shading rules. Create a color chart, for future reference with the pencils you have, by coloring a swatch onto each corresponding square and blending the color out slightly with a Gamsol soaked Q tip. The blank chart can be found here: http://www.heartprints.net/gallery/magic/card/2552/
#2587 09/06/07 Card #2587 This is a close up of the shading that has been blended. Small amounts of pink have also been added to the ear and the nose. Color has been picked up on a tortillon with the pink pencil to rub onto the cheeks. This will keep a darker amount of color from being applied to the face so that the cheek color is not overwhelming. Dab the blending tool into the Gamsol, as needed, to keep the colors flowing nicely. When blending the shading colors, do not over blend. Continue to dab the color lightly with the blending tool or your finger, so you can still see where the shading has been applied. You do not have to always use stumps or tortillons to blend. Q-tips work very well for larger areas and are less expensive than large quantities of blending stumps and tortillons.
#2586 09/06/07 Card #2586 This is a closeup of the balloons. Additional color has been added to create the shaded areas.
#2585 09/06/07 Card #2585 Finished Design Highlight color can also be added around the edge of the design. A pale yellow, pale blue, light grey, or light lavender will highlight the design and really make it stand out. Make sure there is no white space between the color you are adding and the item you are shading. A white gap of space makes the shading look detached from the area. A finished card sample is posted here. http://www.heartprints.net/admin/gallery/magicpenc/card/2598/ Post on the message board if you have any questions at all.
#2552 07/29/07 Card #2552 Download PDF of this template for printing. Download Adobe Reader to view PDF documents. Print the chart on the paper you intend to use, then use a q-tip saturated with Gamsol to blend the colors on the chart.
#2539 07/20/07 Card #2539 close up details My son has made me a blank Chart for pencil colors to use when working. It includes spaces for all 132 colors available, and I printed mine on the paper I use the most. VERY handy to have. Want one? Check the main gallery under MCP Tutorial
